In the ninth paragraph of his letter Lieuten-
-ant Commander Haslewood refers to the question of "bad
faith". I hope that he is not under the impression that
I have imputed bad faith to him or to Mrs. Haslevood. I have never meant to do so. The position as it appears to me is that owing to an imperfect understanding of the facts
Lieutenant Commander and Mrs. Haalewood have attacked a
system, which though by no means ideal has its good points,
instead of abuses of the system - abuses which are no more
typical of the system than cases of cruelty to children such as appear not infrequently in English Police Courts are typical of English family life. I have no doubt that they were actuated by the best of motives but I adhere to my view that their methods were mischievous.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,
humble servant,
